Gastric Balloon

The Gastric Balloon is a non-surgical method of helping achieve short to medium term weight reduction.

The Balloon is simply inserted into the stomach, either by gastroscopy or by swallowing a small capsule. It is then expanded to the approximate size of a small grapefruit (500 - 700mls) with water delivered via a temporary attached catheter. The catheter is then removed and the patient discharged home. The whole process takes about 30 minutes.

There are two main types of balloon; the Allurion balloon is swallowed, and designed to dissolve by itself after 4 months and therefore does not need a procedure to remove it. The alternative balloon is the Orbera balloon, which requires endoscopy for both insertion and removal. The key advantage of the Orbera balloon is longer duration of action- it is left in place for 1 year.

The balloon creates a sense of constant fullness, switching off hunger and providing portion control. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise, patients can lose up to 20kg.

The main drawback of the balloon is its temporary duration of action in contrast to the surgical procedures. However further balloons can be reinserted if desired. Other downsides that may occur in up to 20% of patients include the feeling of nausea or reflux.

Studies have shown that weight loss can be sustained after the balloon is removed provided you continue to follow a healthy lifestyle plan.
