Fees for Gastrointestinal Surgery

The cost of your gastrointestinal (GI) surgery consists of three main components:

  1. Surgeon and Assistant Fees
Our surgeon fees are based on the schedule recommended by the Australian Medical Association. Depending on your level of private health insurance, we may offer “Known Gap” billing. This means you pay a portion of the fee upfront, and your insurer covers the remainder. For an accurate quote, please contact us at
  2. Anaesthetist Fees
Anaesthetists are independent practitioners and bill separately for their services. Typically, out-of-pocket costs are around $500, but this can vary. You will receive a detailed quote from your anaesthetist before your surgery, and pay them directly.
  3. Hospital Fees
Hospital costs are generally covered by private health insurance, although you may be required to pay an excess. For most GI procedures, a minimum of silver-level hospital cover is typically needed. To confirm coverage, please check with your insurer and refer to the procedure codes listed below:

    MBS Procedure Codes:

    • Laparoscopic Fundoplication: 31468
    • Gallbladder Removal: 30445
    • Inguinal/Femoral Hernia: 30648
    • Umbilical Hernia: 30621
    • Hiatus Hernia: 31468
    • Other Abdominal Hernia: 30655
    • Endoscopy: 30473

Please note that any additional procedures such as blood tests, pathology, X-rays, radiology, physiotherapy, discharge medications, or consultations with other specialists are billed separately. While these services are not typically part of your routine admission, the costs involved may not be fully covered by your health insurer.

What if I Am Not Insured?

If you don’t have private health insurance or if your coverage is not sufficient, you have two options:

  1. Self-Insured at Mater Private Hospital
You can choose to proceed as a self-insured patient with Dr. Taylor as your surgeon at the Mater Private Hospital. We will provide a complete quote, so you’ll know exactly what your costs will be.
  2. Medicare at a Public Hospital
If you are eligible for Medicare as a NSW resident, you can opt to have your procedure at a public hospital at no cost to you. However, please note that as Concord Public Hospital is a teaching facility, your procedure will be performed by a senior registrar under Dr. Taylor’s supervision, and there may be a waiting period.
